5 Common Spring-Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid

Most homeowners dread spring cleaning. It always appears that there is so much to do after the cold, musty season of winter. Spring runs from late March through late June, meaning it will soon be time to open the windows and slap on the cleaning gloves. To make sure the home is as clean as it should be, here are common spring-cleaning mistakes to avoid.

  1. Failing to look up It's almost natural to pay more attention to the dirt and disorder at eye level. Spring cleaning is a deep cleaning house exercise that requires homeowners to look at every spot—including up. Failing to look up before or during cleaning leads to a shocking discovery when everything else is clean. The cobwebs and dust clinging to the ceiling and fans can make a clean home look only half done.
  2. Going in without a plan You probably decided to complete spring cleaning in a few hours. Then, you start only to discover that you can't seem to get anything done. Not having a plan for your spring cleaning is a recipe for disaster. A program helps you clean with a method and purpose. It also guides you to work faster and know what you can achieve in a few hours. A defined cleaning schedule is an excellent way to start.
  3. Skipping the clutter Cleaning around the clutter in the home is difficult. Do not think of any cleaning shortcuts that involve leaving the confusion behind. To increase your chances of a smooth spring cleaning, declutter the home first. Put away toys, misplaced items, and any other objects where dust and dirt can hide.
  4. Going in alone Yes, spring cleaning can be hectic, but it gets worse when you take on the entire house cleaning by yourself. Enlist the assistance of a friend or your family. Give children simple tasks such as dusting, decluttering, and so on. Going in alone will only leave you with sore muscles and grumpiness.
  5. Using the wrong tools Utilizing poorly-designed tools is a common spring-cleaning mistake. The wrong tools make cleaning longer and less effective. Buy the right cleaning tools such as vinegar, a steam mop, microfiber cloth, and duster with an extension pole for those upper areas.

Now you know what mistakes you've probably made with spring cleaning in the past, use this knowledge to get it right in the coming season. If you plan to sell your home this spring, start cleaning early. Ask your local real estate specialist the best time to hold your spring open house, and get the spring cleaning done in time for it.
